Emma Mattesky | Director of Innovation, Benchmark School

Ms. Mattesky’s diverse experience in education includes time in both the public and private sector. Following her studies at Tulane University and graduate work at University of Pennsylvania, she applied her expertise in innovative teaching methodology and curriculum development. She has served in several roles in education, including classroom instructor, Internal School Consultant, Director of Innovation and professional development provider for teachers at private schools. Additionally, she helps develop and implement 21st century education initiatives that utilize design thinking, Maker Space, and STEAM pedagogy to support new programs

Topic: Our Innovation Imperative: Utilizing Innovative Pedagogies to Prepare Students for the Future

Overview: The primary educational goal of design thinking and makerspace education is to develop an effective, general problem-solving process that will habitually jump into action any time a meaningful situation arises. It develops a habit of the mind that the future of work and the success of our students in an accelerating world require. Regardless of the content area in which we teach, how do we integrate design thinking and makerspace pedagogy into our curriculum? How do we enhance our student’s abilities to be learners, thinkers, and problem-solvers in any context?
